Every journey with psoriasis is unique — but after 27 years of helping people find relief, we've seen a consistent pattern emerge. While timing varies by individual, the sequence is remarkably similar across thousands of users.

The most important thing to know before you start: the early stages often look worse, not better. Flaking increases, redness seems more pronounced, itching intensifies. This is not failure — it is the formula working.

The critical window

Weeks 2 through 5 are where most people stop. The skin may look unchanged or temporarily worse as dead skin sheds faster. Keep going. The improvement that follows this window is typically the most significant of the entire process.

Stage 1 Days 1–20

Skin activation — it often looks worse first.

What you'll notice

More flaking, itching, and redness than before you started. The scale may appear to increase in the first 1–2 weeks.

Why this happens

The salicylic acid is lifting built-up scale from beneath the surface. As it loosens, more flaking becomes visible before it sheds. This is the formula working, not a reaction to it.

Don't stop. This is your skin waking up. The discomfort of Stage 1 is the price of entry to Stage 2.

Stage 2 Days 21–30

First signs of relief — inflammation starts to calm.

What you'll notice

Pink skin where thick plaques were. Reduced elevation. Skin is softening and the outermost plaques are beginning to break down.

Why this happens

Coal tar is beginning to slow the abnormally rapid skin cell production. The skin's surface is thinning as the underlying cycle decelerates.

Even if it feels better, keep applying every night. Stopping at Stage 2 is the most common reason for relapse.

Stage 3 Days 31–40

Healthy areas emerge — mixed results are normal.

What you'll notice

Clear patches appearing at the center of lesions while borders remain. Skin is healing from the inside out.

Why this happens

Skin cell turnover is stabilizing. Healing spreads outward from the center of each plaque — the border is the last to clear.

Mixed results at this stage are not a sign of failure. This is a critical transition. Stay consistent.

Stage 4 Days 41–60+

Visible clearing — and the work of staying clear.

What you'll notice

Skin looks noticeably clearer. Smoother texture, fading redness. Faint pink or light-brown marks where plaques were are normal and fade over time.

Why this happens

With consistent nightly use, the formula has had enough time to work through the full cycle. The skin is approaching its natural baseline.

Stay consistent. Maintenance use — Shampoo 3x per week — helps prevent flares from returning.
